In our training using MotoShot Moving Target Systems, we’ve observed a transformation from officers hesitating when the mover turns toward them, trying to assess the threat, to officers quickly identifying “shoot” or “don’t shoot” situations and responding appropriately. Officers have learned to take smart angles and make rapid decisions, whether the target is holding a “Sharpie marker” or a pair of sunglasses.
We emphasize to officers that when a suspect turns toward them and presents an object in a manner suggestive of a shooting posture, the officer must be able to justify the use of force, ranging from verbal commands to deadly force.
